AMRIT FESTIVAL OF INDEPENDENCE "A Tribute to Heroes of Indian Freedom Struggle"

        India's Forgotten ...? Freedom Fighter

                               Matangini Hazra….?

I will hoist the tricolor….Vande Mataram

Matangini Hazra associated with the freedom struggle at the age of 62 The way he fought the British and did not let the tricolor bow till his last breath, that makes him completely different from others.

Matangini Hazra was born in a very poor family in Hogla village of Midnapore district in East Bengal (present day Bangladesh). Due to poverty, at the age of 12, she was married to Trilochan Hajra, a 62-year-old widower of village Alinan. When Matangini turned 18, her husband died. Step-children kicked out of the house. So she started living in a hut in Tamluk of Midnapore, West Bengal. He used to work hard in people's homes and run his house from that.

In 1932, the freedom movement started across the country. The processions used to go out daily, chanting Vande Mataram. When one such procession passed from near Matangini's house, she welcomed her with the sound of conch shell according to Bengali tradition and, knowing what the 62-year-old Hazra knew, she also joined the procession, reaching Krishnaganj market in Tamluk. The meeting took place. There Matangini took an oath to fight with everyone in the freedom struggle with body, mind and money. Commanding the Quit India Movement in Tamluk, he took part in the chowkidari kar roko demonstration. She started walking in the forefront with a black flag, got 6 months jail in return.

In 1942 the 'Quit India Movement' was announced and the slogan 'Do or Die' was given. Matangini Hazra had accepted that now the time of independence has come near. He took command of the Quit India Movement in Tamluk, it was decided to end the British rule by hoisting the tricolor at all government offices and police stations in Midnapore.

It was the day of 29 September 1942, there was a procession of 6000 people, mostly women in it. The procession started moving towards the Tamluk police station, the police warned, people started retreating. Matangini came out from the middle and came in front of everyone. He had the tricolor in his right hand and said 'I will hoist the tricolor, patriotism on 72-year-old Matangini Hajra! It was so dominant that as soon as the first shot was fired, the police said 'Vande Mataram', the police again shot on the other hand, she again said 'Vande Mataram', but somehow kept the flag, did not let it fall, kept on talking Vande Mataram, raised the flag Stayed and kept moving towards the police station. Then a police officer fired the third shot, directly on that Bharat Mata's forehead... in the middle. She fell down but did not let the flag fall on the ground, placed it on her chest and said loudly again Vande Mataram, Bharat Mata ki Jai. Matangini's dead body rolled over there.

Angry people occupied government offices over Matangini's murder

Everyone thought when an old lady can show so much courage for the country, then why can't we. People captured all government offices and declared their own government there. Five years ago, after declaring her area independent from the British and two years later, they left their possession from government offices, Matangini did not try to incite people to violence. His principle of non-violence was not allowed to deter him. This sacrifice created so much enthusiasm in the whole area that within ten days people expelled the British and established an independent government there, which worked for 21 months.

Significant Contribution To Independence

This heroine had an important contribution in India's independence in the year 1947. He told that women are not just for being imprisoned in the house. If needed, she can also take up arms and counter the enemy. Even today in Calcutta you will find many schools, colonies and roads named after him. Salute to the spirit of Matangini Hazra!
