Father of freedom movement in Rajasthan

Arjun Lal Sethi was a famous freedom fighter, revolutionary and teacher from Jaipur, India. He is called the father of freedom movement in Rajasthan. He was one of the freedom fighters of India. When the Governor-General Lord Hardinge's procession was passing through Chandni Chowk in Delhi, a bomb was hurled at it. This plan to throw the bomb was made by Arjun Lal Sethi. So Sethi was arrested. Due to lack of evidence against him, he could not be punished, yet Sethi was kept in jail without trial.

Introduction

Arjun Lal Sethi was born on September 9, 1880 in a Jain family in Jaipur. In 1902, he passed the BA examination from Allahabad. Arjun Lal Sethi was an outstanding scholar of English, Persian, Sanskrit, Arabic and Pali. After this he was appointed teacher of Thakur Devi Singh of Chomu. In 1960, he established Vardhman Vidyalaya in Jaipur to give political education to the people. Apparently it was a religious school, but in reality revolutionaries were trained here. This purpose of his is understood from the fact that revolutionaries like Manakchand, Motichand, Vishnu Dutt, Jaichand and Zorawar Singh were the contributions of this school. After contact with revolutionary Rash Behari Bose, he took upon himself the responsibility of forming Shastra Kranti in Rajasthan. Not only from Rajasthan but also from other parts of the country used to come for revolutionary training in this school. Gradually, the school of Arjun Lal Sethi became the hub of activities of the revolutionaries in Rajasthan.

Participation in the Freedom Movement

From a very young age, he had actively involved himself in the national movements for the independence of India. He had actually dedicated his life to the service of his country, he was such a revolutionary, for whose guidance revolutionaries like Chandrashekhar Azad, Shaukat Usmani, Ashfaq Ulla Khan used to take guidance and inspiration from him. Sethi ji's speeches were very passionate. He was adept at instilling a sense of zeal and patriotism among the revolutionaries. He was very popular among the youth.

Participation in the Revolutionary Movement, Arrested, Punished & Released

Funds were needed to run the revolutionary movement. Therefore, Arjun Lal Sethi planned to kill a wealthy Mahant based in Mughalsarai and get his money. Sethi sent 4 students to Banaras under the leadership of Vishnudutt, the teacher of Vardhaman Vidyalaya. A Jain monk was robbed. Mahant was killed but the money was not received. Sethi's name was also associated with this scandal. All the revolutionaries who took part in the massacre were arrested and one of them, Motichand, was hanged and Vishnudutt was given life imprisonment. Arjun Lal Sethi could not be arrested due to lack of evidence. On 23 December, when a procession of the Governor-General of India Lord Hardinge passed through Chandni Chowk in Delhi, a bomb was hurled at him. It is believed that the famous revolutionary who threw the bomb was Rash Behari Bose, but in reality this bomb was thrown by the revolutionary Thakur Zorawar Singh Barah of Rajasthan wearing a burqa from the Marwari library located in Chandni Chowk. Among the people who were imprisoned in connection with the Hardinge Bomb case were Balmukund, Motichand and Vishnudutt, the prominent revolutionaries of Rajasthan. Amirchand, the informant of this trial, while giving his testimony, revealed the secret that the conspiracy was planned by Arjun Lal Sethi. So Sethi was arrested. Arjun Lal Sethi could not be punished due to lack of evidence against him, yet Sethi was kept in jail without trial. Later on August 5, 1914, by order of the Maharaja of Jaipur, he got 5 years imprisonment. The government feared that the presence of Arjun Lal Sethi in Jaipur jail might jeopardize the peace and order of Jaipur, so Sethi was sent to Vellore (Madras) jail. There he started a hunger strike over the misbehavior and atrocities of the prisoners, as a result of which the atrocities on the revolutionaries stopped. After his release from Vellore Jail in 1920, Sethiji made his work in Ajmer and also participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement. After coming from jail, the place of work of Arjun Lal Sethi became Ajmer. The famous revolutionary Chandrashekhar Azad and his party people used to come to him for guidance.

Death

Arjun Lal Sethi broke away from the Congress due to the conspiracy of Gandhian Congressmen. His financial condition was not good. He started teaching Arabic and Persian to Muslim children at the dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer to make a living and it was here that he died on 23 December 1941. The people of the dargah buried him as a Muslim. Arjun Lal Sethi is one of the leaders who awakened the political consciousness of Rajasthan.
