First Gurkha soldier of Indian National Army (INA)

Many brave sons have given their martyrdom in the freedom of the country, one of them includes the immortal martyr Major Durgamalla. Who gave his martyrdom for the country by blowing the trumpet of the struggle against British rule. Who fought against the British forces in World War II. Major Durga Malla Indian Gorkhas were the first Gurkha soldiers of the Indian National Army (INA) to sacrifice their lives for the Indian independence movement.

Major Durga Malla was born on 1 July 1913 in Doiwala village near Dehradun to Gangaram Malla Chhetri, a Naib Subedar in the Gorkha Rifles. He was the eldest son of Naib Ganga Malla. Since childhood, he had a passion for patriotism. He wanted to free India from the shackles of British rule from a young age. Malla was then a student of class nine. He attracted everyone's attention with his public outcry against the British. At that time the flame of freedom revolution was burning in the country. With the slogan of Quit India, there were mass movements everywhere. He did his early education at Gorkha Military Middle School, now known as Gorkha Military Inter College.

In 1931, Durga Malla joined the 2/1 Battalion of the Gorkha Rifles. On 1 December 1941, the Japanese declared war by attacking Allied forces stationed in the Southeast Asian region. In 1941 (before going abroad for war), Malla was married to Sharda Malla in Shyam Nagar, Himachal Pradesh 1941. Three days after the wedding, Malla was called back to his headquarters and instructed to go abroad.

Azad Hind Fauj was formed in Singapore on 1st September 1942, he joined the Azad Hind Fauj of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose with the aim of giving independence to the country. In which Durga Malla had a very commendable role. He made a big contribution in involving the youth in the Azad Hind Fauj. He was entrusted with the main task of intelligence in the Azad Hind Fauj. Meanwhile, crossing the Bharat Varma border and entering Assam for intelligence work, the British army took him captive on 27 March 1944. He was severely tortured after being taken prisoner of war and on trial. He was then sentenced to death by a British military court. On 25 August 1944, Major Durga Malla was hanged in the District Jail Delhi.

Major Durga Malla's wife was brought to the jail cell but Malla did not succumb to the pressure. Malla told his wife, "The sacrifice I am offering will not go in vain. India will be free. I believe. It is only time." That's it, Sharda! Don't worry, crores of Indians are with you." These were his last words to his wife.

August 25, the day of his execution, is celebrated as Baldan Divas or Martyrs' Day by Gorkhas all over India. A memorial has also been built in his memory in Doiwala Municipality.

Many salutes to such brave warriors who died for the freedom of the country. The Amrit Festival of Independence gives us this opportunity to know our history even more closely keeping in mind our future because when you read about the freedom struggle and try to know it closely, you will know how India has given birth to heroes and they had so much self-confidence and so much love for the country that they were ready to sacrifice their lives. This is also the reason why many people fought for freedom. They were martyred while fighting the war, and while leaving, they all raised the slogan of independence and saw the dream of an independent India, and this is also the reason that India got the result of its struggle and India became independent from British rule on 15 August 1947.
